Acting Director Diar Nurbintoro Speaks at Public Discussion Session on the Past, Present, and Future of NAM
The year 2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which took place from September 1st to September 6th, 1961 in Belgrade and was attended by up to 25 delegates from developing countries.
As a result, on October 13th, 2021, the University of Belgrade, in partnership with the Indonesian Embassy in Belgrade, hosted a Public Discussion on the past, present, and future of NAM. The public discussion session had three speakers, one from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and one from the University of Belgrade, including Acting Director Diar Nurbintoro of the NAM Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (CSSTC). Zoom was used to hold the activity in a hybrid format.
“One of NAM’s goals is to strengthen collaboration among developing nations and to carry out programme activities that are relevant and suitable to developing nations,” stated Acting Director Diar.
Although NAM was initially focused on political activities, with the establishment of NAM CSSTC in the early 1990s, NAM began to gradually shift its focus to an economic movement known as South-South Cooperation (SSC).
Several SSC efforts were hampered at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the transnational movement’s difficulties in providing training for member countries.
Diar, on the other hand, stated that since 2020, NAM CSSTC has significantly transformed the programme’s concept by converting physical training into virtual training. With this, NAM CSSTC is still able to respond to the requirements of member countries despite the pandemic’s hurdles.
To address the obstacles of implementing activities during the pandemic, the NAM CSSTC devised techniques such as focusing on regions/continents, which allow all NAM member countries to participate in NAM CSSTC activities.
