World Coconut Day 2024

Port Moresby, 30 September – 4 October, 2024

NAM Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM CSSTC) participated in the World Coconut Day 2024 celebrations from September 30 to October 4 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Organized by the International Coconut Community (ICC) and Kokonas Indastri Kopresyen (KIK), the event gathered stakeholders from coconut-producing nations to explore opportunities for advancing the global coconut industry. Countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, the Philippines, and Thailand participated in sessions addressing vital topics like Coconut Replanting and Climate-Smart Farming, which focused on sustainable farming practices to combat climate change, and Coconut Biosecurity and Conservation, discussing methods to protect crops from pests and diseases. Additional sessions covered the Health & Nutritional Benefits of coconut products, innovations in coconut technology, Coconut Downstream Processing and Utilization, and new opportunities in Digital Marketing & Market Trends. The event also emphasized Gender-Inclusive Coconut Business, advocating for greater gender equality within the industry.

A key feature of the event was the exhibition, which showcased a wide range of coconut-based products from participating countries, highlighting the versatility of coconut in industries like food, health, and beauty. Traditional Papua New Guinean handicrafts made from coconut fibers were also displayed, showcasing the rich cultural heritage associated with the coconut sector. Delegates had the opportunity to visit Kokopo, a significant coconut-producing region in Papua New Guinea, where they observed sustainable coconut farming practices and explored the region’s agritourism potential.

At the closing ceremony, NAM CSSTC Director, Ambassador Diar Nurbintoro, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the event organizers and participants. The Director also presented plaques to Hon. Boniface Gerep, Deputy Governor of New Britain, and Mr. Alan Aku, Managing Director of Kokonas Industri Koperesyen (KIK), in recognition of their contributions to the success of the event.

The World Coconut Day 2024 reinforced the importance of continued collaboration between ICC member nations to promote sustainability, drive technological innovation, and ensure inclusive growth within the coconut sector. The event served as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and partnership-building, helping to shape the future of the global coconut industry.
