PREFACE

Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM CSSTC) has convened a workshop on Micro Credit Schemes in NAM Member Countries in Jakarta, Indonesia on June 2002. The workshop was attended by experts and participants from NAM member countries and came up with tremendous ideas and recommendations.  Regarding the outcomes of the workshop, it has been identified that training is one of the areas, which should be explored.  The Centre decided to follow-up this recommendation by convening series of regional training for micro-credit practitioners in NAM member countries. It was decided to commence the training programme by convening a regional training for micro credit practitioners in East Asia and the Pacific region.

The Regional Training on “Micro Credit Scheme” was then conducted in Jakarta on 27-31 August 2002 .The training was organized by NAM CSSTC in collaboration with Bank BRI, a state-owned bank which is one of the largest commercial banks in Indonesia conducting a full range of commercial banking services, domestic and international.

The training is intended to provide the participants with maximum exposure on sustainable micro credit practices. The training substance focused on micro credit technical aspects and is expected to provide instant benefit to micro credit practitioners in NAM member countries. Upon completion of this training each trainee is expected to be able to deliver significant contribution to the development and mobilization of micro credit practices in his/her country.

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia financed this training.

NAM CSSTC intends to proceed by conducting similar trainings in other regions within NAM countries and to follow-up on the action plans presented by the trainees with the objective of assisting interested NAM member countries in translating ideas into concrete programmes and actions on the ground.
